Swift Transportation Looks to Make Roads Safer with Truck Camera Systems

Drivers of Swift Transportation’s company-owned trucks will be monitored by camera systems soon, according to a recent report from www.overdriveonline.com.

The trucking news site said an internal company video featuring Swift President and COO Richard Stocking was sent out to drivers notifying them that the company would begin outfitting more than 6,000 trucks with Lytx DriveCam systems. Swift is the third-largest U.S. trucking company, according to the Commercial Carrier Journal (CCJ) Top 250 list.

The DriveCam systems include forward-facing and driver-facing cameras. According to Overdrive, Stocking tells drivers in the video message that the cameras will help “correct any at-risk driving behaviors you might not be aware of.”

The camera system is not intended to continually watch drivers in real-time, according to Stocking. Instead, recordings of safety-critical events such as hard braking or swerving will be uploaded, including the 10 seconds of recording before and after the event.

Implementation of the camera systems is expected to begin in May, with completion of the project scheduled for the end of 2016.
